10 Causes of Back Pain

Understanding Vertebral Osteomyelitis

Vertebral osteomyelitis is a type of bone infection that primarily affects the lumbar spine. It accounts for about three to five percent of all cases of osteomyelitis. This condition occurs when the bone becomes infected by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. One of the most common culprits behind vertebral osteomyelitis is Staphylococcus aureus.

The infection typically enters the bloodstream after certain spinal procedures, causing inflammation and gradually destroying the bone and surrounding tissues. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove or replace the infected bone. However, the standard treatment for vertebral osteomyelitis involves the administration of intravenous antibiotics.

Back Pain and Cancer

There is a rare but significant link between back pain and cancer. While certain types of bone cancer can directly cause back pain, the presence of metastasized cancer cells can also lead to the development of masses on the vertebrae in the spine or other areas that put pressure on the back. Additionally, chemotherapy drugs used in cancer treatment can sometimes cause nerve pain, resulting in a painful condition known as peripheral neuropathy.
