A goiter refers to the abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, which is a vital organ located at the base of the neck responsible for hormone production. While autoimmune disease is the primary cause of goiter in developed countries, hyperthyroidism also plays a role in its development. Apart from the visible swelling in the neck, individuals with goiter may experience coughing, hoarseness, and a sensation of tightness in the throat. As the goiter grows larger, it can exert pressure on the esophagus, leading to difficulties in swallowing.
