10 Causes of Down Syndrome

A Parent with Down Syndrome

Individuals with Down syndrome are capable of forming emotionally attached relationships, which can contribute to the development of their social and cognitive skills. They are also capable of engaging in romantic and sexual relationships, and their reproductive systems typically function normally. However, there is a higher risk for women with Down syndrome who become pregnant to give birth to children with the condition. Research suggests that Down syndrome is directly passed from mother to child in over 30 percent of cases, and in some instances, the transmission rate may be nearly 50 percent. Conversely, men with Down syndrome are generally infertile, resulting in a very low risk of passing the condition on to their offspring.

Understanding Translocation Trisomy 21

Translocation trisomy 21 is a less common form of Down syndrome compared to standard trisomy 21. While individuals without Down syndrome typically have 46 chromosomes in their cells, those with translocation trisomy 21 also have the same number. The difference lies in the fact that a copy of all or part of the 21st chromosome becomes attached to another chromosome within the cell, leading to the manifestation of Down syndrome traits. Translocation trisomy 21 can be either inherited or occur randomly, and individuals affected by this genetic anomaly usually exhibit both the physical and cognitive symptoms associated with Down syndrome.
