Parkinson’s Disease: A Neurological Disorder
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurological disorder that impacts a significant number of individuals in the United States, with an estimated 500,000 affected. The exact cause of PD is still unknown, but researchers believe it results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease typically start with mild muscle spasms and slower movements, gradually progressing into involuntary contractions of the entire body as the condition advances. PD can also lead to various types of tremors, including eye twitching.
Tourette’s Syndrome
Tourette’s syndrome is a genetic disorder that leads to involuntary and intense muscle contractions. The exact cause of this condition is still unknown. One of the more well-known symptoms of Tourette’s is the occurrence of verbal outbursts or sudden cursing. However, similar to Parkinson’s disease, early onset Tourette’s can also manifest as involuntary spasms of body parts, such as the eyelids.
