10 Causes of Glaucoma

Understanding Exfoliation Syndrome

Exfoliation syndrome is a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of extracellular material in the eye. Individuals diagnosed with this condition often experience more severe glaucoma and have a poorer prognosis compared to those with glaucoma caused by other factors. It is believed that exfoliation syndrome is not only an ocular disorder but also a systemic condition that may be linked to other serious health issues, including stroke and hypertension.

Understanding Eye Pigments and Pigmentary Glaucoma

Eye pigments play a crucial role in the coloration and functioning of our eyes. However, when the pigment from the colored part of the eye starts to flake off and obstruct the fluid drainage, it can lead to a condition known as pigmentary glaucoma. This particular eye condition tends to affect young, near-sighted men of Caucasian descent more frequently.

Medical professionals typically manage pigmentary glaucoma by focusing on reducing the pressure within the eye. Unfortunately, there is currently no known way to prevent the ongoing flaking of pigment from the iris, further complicating the treatment process.
