Neurological Problems
Urinary continence can be affected by various neurological disorders. The proper functioning of the bladder relies on nerve signals. If these signals are disrupted or stop altogether, it can lead to urinary incontinence. Several neurological disorders are known to cause this symptom, including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, tumors, spinal or brain injuries, strokes, and certain psychological disorders. If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, it is likely that your doctor has already discussed the possibility of developing urinary incontinence. However, it is important to bring up any worsening symptoms to your physician.
Drinks and Foods that Can Trigger Urinary Incontinence
Consuming certain drinks or foods can sometimes lead to urinary incontinence. However, the good news is that this type of incontinence is usually temporary and tends to improve with time. The following drinks, foods, and even medications have the potential to overstimulate the bladder, causing urinary incontinence:
- Alcoholic drinks, including red or white wine
- Beverages containing caffeine
- Decaffeinated teas and coffee
- Sodas and carbonated drinks
- Foods or drinks containing corn syrup
- Artificial sweeteners like Equal
- Foods high in citrus fruit
- Acidic foods
- Overly sweet foods or drinks
In addition to drinks and foods, certain medications can also trigger urinary incontinence. These include heart medications, blood pressure pills, muscle relaxers, and sleep agents.
