Mononucleosis, also known as mono, is a viral infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. While it can cause a sore throat similar to a common cold, there are distinct symptoms that differentiate it. Loss of appetite, accompanied by a fever and muscle aches, is also common with this infection. If you are suffering from strep throat, it is important to be able to distinguish its symptoms from those of a common cold or mono. While you may experience general malaise, loss of appetite, a fever, and chills, there are additional indicators specific to strep throat. One such symptom is an unusual taste in the mouth. Additionally, your swollen and red throat will develop gray or white patches. Swallowing may become difficult if you have strep throat. To confirm the presence of streptococcus, your doctor will perform a throat culture. It is important to note that you will remain contagious until you receive appropriate treatment.
