10 Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments of Hyperthermia

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is a severe condition caused by excessive heat exposure, which necessitates medical attention. It shares similar symptoms with other heat-related conditions, as the body loses its ability to regulate temperature effectively. Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include profuse sweating, dizziness, thirst, lack of coordination, and difficulty concentrating. Additionally, individuals may experience a rapid pulse, cool and clammy skin, general weakness, nausea, vomiting, and even fainting. Heat exhaustion serves as a warning sign before progressing to heat stroke. Immediate actions should be taken, such as resting, consuming fluids, and seeking assistance or calling 911.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke, the most severe stage of hyperthermia, can be fatal, as evidenced by the deaths of several athletes on the playing field due to overexertion and heat stroke. If left untreated, the symptoms of heat stroke worsen over time. Individuals affected by heat stroke experience a significant increase in body temperature, accompanied by a rapid or strong pulse, hot, red, or dry skin, fast and deep breathing, reduced perspiration, headaches, confusion, disorientation, blurred vision, irritability, mood changes, and may even faint or lose consciousness. In severe cases, heat stroke can lead to seizures, organ failure, coma, muscle damage, and kidney damage. Immediate transportation to the hospital is crucial for anyone with heat stroke to receive prompt medical attention.
