10 Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments: Peritonitis

Symptom: Flu-Like Symptoms

When it comes to peritonitis, experiencing flu-like symptoms is not uncommon. Similar to other health conditions, you may develop a fever along with chills. Nausea and vomiting are also prevalent, along with a loss of appetite. Additionally, you may feel exceptionally tired or fatigued, even if you had a restful night’s sleep. If you notice flu-like symptoms accompanied by bloating, reduced bowel movements, or abdominal pain, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.

Treatment: Hospitalization

If you are diagnosed with peritonitis, hospitalization will likely be necessary. The severity of your symptoms will determine the treatment you receive. Intravenous fluids (IV) may be administered, along with supplemental oxygen and pain medications. In more severe cases, a blood transfusion may be required. During your hospital stay, your doctor will closely monitor your condition to prevent the development of sepsis or septic shock.
