10 Celiac Disease Signs

Flatulence: A Common Symptom of Celiac Disease

One of the common symptoms experienced by individuals with Celiac disease is chronic flatulence, which affects approximately 50 percent of people with this condition. Celiac disease is a condition in which the small intestines are unable to adequately absorb gluten-rich foods. As a result, sugars such as maltose, lactose, and sucrose pass into the colon without being properly digested. In the colon, these sugars ferment and produce hydrogen, which is then expelled through the rectum as flatulence.

While flatulence can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing, it is important to note that individuals with undiagnosed celiac disease may not initially associate this symptom with their condition. They may simply assume that they are more flatulent than others and fail to investigate their symptoms further. However, it is crucial to be aware of this symptom, as it can serve as an indicator of an underlying celiac disease diagnosis.

Managing Acid Reflux and Heartburn for Celiac Disease Patients

While not typically associated with celiac disease, acid reflux and heartburn are common symptoms experienced by many patients with the condition. Acid reflux refers to the burning sensation that occurs when stomach acid moves up past the lower esophageal sphincter, causing discomfort in the chest. Interestingly, many celiac disease patients find significant relief from acid reflux by eliminating gluten from their diet.
