10 Common Colon Polyp Types

The Basics of Inflammatory Colon Polyps

When it comes to inflammatory colon polyps, they are often referred to as “false polyps.” Unlike other types of polyps, these growths are typically benign and have a low risk of developing into cancer. Inflammatory colon polyps are commonly associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and are frequently found in the colon of individuals affected by this condition. Additionally, they can also occur in individuals with Chron’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Although it is necessary to remove these polyps, they pose a minimal risk of becoming cancerous.

Understanding Hyperplastic Polyps

A hyperplastic polyp is a common type of colon polyp characterized by its rapid growth of abnormal tissue. The term “hyperplastic” refers to the fast rate at which the tissue mass increases, resulting in an enlarged or engorged polyp. Despite their speedy growth, most hyperplastic polyps are benign and carry a very low risk of developing into cancer. In many cases, they are promptly removed upon detection. It is worth noting that hyperplastic growth can also occur in other parts of the body, within various organs and tissues, often leading to confusion with a benign tumor.
