10 Causes and Symptoms of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Symptoms: Dizziness

Dizziness, or a mild form of vertigo, can be caused by an imbalance of fluids in the ear, leading to feelings of faintness or unsteadiness. Although the term “dizzy” can have different interpretations, it generally refers to a sensation of lightheadedness or an impending collapse. Various inner ear issues, such as inner ear injuries, ear infections, and eustachian tube dysfunctions, can contribute to dizziness. If you are experiencing dizziness along with ear pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention for a thorough examination of your ears. However, it is important to note that dizziness alone is not sufficient for a specific diagnosis, as it is a broad symptom with various potential causes.

Symptoms: Muffled Hearing

When there is a blockage in the eustachian tube or around the eardrum, it can lead to a condition known as muffled hearing. This condition is characterized by mild hearing loss, where your own voice may sound different to you, and sounds around you may appear significantly quieter. In an attempt to alleviate the fullness in your ear, yawning can provide temporary relief by attempting to “pop” the eustachian tube. Once the eustachian tube is completely cleared, your hearing will gradually improve.
