16 Disturbing Things Your Nails Reveal About Your Health

Lumpy or Pitted Nails

When your nails have an uneven surface with pits or dents, it could be a sign of various underlying conditions. One common cause of this nail disorder is psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. Studies suggest that approximately 50% of individuals with psoriasis also experience issues with their nails. Additionally, other factors that can contribute to lumpy or pitted nails include psoriatic arthritis, eczema, lichen planus, and reactive arthritis.

While psoriasis is a common culprit, alopecia areata can also be responsible for nail pitting. However, in the case of alopecia areata, the dents are typically fine rather than rough. It’s worth noting that nail pitting can also occur in rare instances of an inflammatory condition called sarcoidosis.

Unusual Nail Edges

The areas where the edge of the nail meets the surrounding skin are referred to as the lateral nail folds. These regions can often become dry, irritated, and occasionally painful. While this may be uncomfortable, it is usually not a cause for alarm. Nail biting, cold weather, frequent contact with water or chemicals, and infection are common factors that contribute to this condition. Additionally, skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis can also lead to irritation around the nail edges.
