Enzymes play a crucial role in facilitating chemical reactions within the body. These remarkable catalysts work by interacting with specific molecules known as substrates. The process involves the binding of substrates to a specific region on the enzyme called the active site. There are two prevailing theories that explain this interaction.

The first theory, known as the lock and key theory, suggests that the active site of the enzyme is precisely shaped to accommodate specific substrates. This specific fit allows for a more efficient chemical reaction to occur. On the other hand, the induced-fit model proposes that both the enzyme and substrate undergo slight changes in shape to bind together.

Regardless of the mechanism, once the enzyme and substrate join at the active site, a chemical reaction takes place, resulting in the formation of a new product. Once the reaction is complete, the enzyme can detach from the product and move on to catalyze another reaction.
