10 Facts about Orthostatic Hypotension

How Does Standing Up Help Lower Blood Pressure?

Standing up causes blood to accumulate in the legs and abdominal area, resulting in a temporary decrease in blood pressure. This is a natural response of the body. In a healthy individual, the body automatically compensates for this drop in blood pressure by increasing the heart rate to restore it to a normal level. However, in cases of orthostatic hypotension, this compensatory mechanism is disrupted, leading to difficulties in correcting low blood pressure when standing up. There are various factors that can contribute to the occurrence of orthostatic hypotension.

Causes of Orthostatic Hypotension

Orthostatic hypotension can be caused by a variety of factors. One common and temporary cause is dehydration. This can occur due to a stomach bug, not consuming enough fluids, or engaging in vigorous exercise. However, once adequate hydration levels are restored, the body is able to correct the blood pressure after standing.

Issues with the cardiovascular system can also contribute to orthostatic hypotension. Conditions affecting the endocrine and nervous systems often lead to the development of this condition as well. In older individuals, orthostatic hypotension may occur after eating.
