10 FAQs About Astigmatism

What Are the Available Corrective Options for Astigmatism?

Astigmatism, fortunately, can be effectively treated with various corrective options. The most common and widely used treatment for astigmatism is the use of corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses, which help to compensate for the improper refraction of light. In certain cases, doctors may recommend rigid contact lenses to temporarily correct the curvature of the cornea. This treatment, known as orthokeratology or Ortho-K, can enable individuals to achieve normal vision even without wearing corrective lenses, as long as they continue with the treatment. However, for more severe cases of astigmatism, refractive surgery may be necessary.

Is Corrective Surgery Safe?

When performed by a qualified eye surgeon, corrective surgeries are generally considered safe. However, it is important to note that all medical procedures come with certain risks, and prospective patients should be aware of them. Some common risks associated with various forms of corrective surgery, such as LASIK, LASEK, and other laser surgeries, include the development of dry eyes. In some cases, these procedures can also lead to more severe symptoms like glare, halos, and double vision. Additionally, there is a possibility of under or overcorrections. For instance, procedures like photorefractive keratectomy involve the removal of the outer portion of the cornea, which often results in moderate to severe post-surgical pain.
