10 FAQs about Plagiocephaly

When is the optimal time to address plagiocephaly?

During the first 18 months of life, a baby’s skull remains soft and malleable, allowing for potential correction of any flattened areas. This makes babies between 3 and 18 months old suitable candidates for receiving a baby headband or helmet to treat plagiocephaly. However, once a baby reaches 18 months of age, they no longer qualify for cranial remolding orthosis. By the time a child reaches two years old, their head shape is fully established and cannot be altered.

Is the Cranial Remolding Orthosis Uncomfortable for Babies?

Initial discomfort is possible, but it decreases with the baby’s age. When introducing the headband or helmet, younger babies tend to offer less resistance. These specially designed helmets are lightweight and should not hinder movement. Within a few days, your baby will likely adjust to wearing the helmet.
