10 Fascinating Facts About REM Sleep

Alcohol and Drugs: Detrimental Effects on REM Sleep

Alcohol and drugs may seem like a quick fix for sleep issues, but they can actually disrupt the neurotransmitters responsible for regulating sleep. A study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research highlights the impact of these substances on sleep. Although a single drink can expedite the onset of sleep, it is overshadowed by the detrimental effects on deep sleep during the latter part of the night.

REM Sleep: Boosting Creative Thinking

A recent study conducted by the University of California suggests that REM sleep plays a crucial role in enhancing creative problem-solving abilities. The researchers propose that during REM sleep, the brain forms connections between unrelated ideas, which ultimately improves creative thinking.

The study hypothesizes that a decrease in the levels of neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and acetylcholine, during REM sleep may facilitate the integration of information into associative pathways within the brain. In contrast, during wakefulness, the levels of these neurotransmitters are higher, resulting in restricted connections in the neocortex.
