Nuts and Seeds: A Natural Solution for NAFLD Prevention
A recent study conducted in 2021 has shed light on the potential benefits of including nuts and seeds in our diet to prevent Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). This study has revealed that the unique nutrient composition present in nuts and seeds may play a crucial role in combating NAFLD. For instance, regular consumption of walnuts has been found to promote a reduction in liver fat. The high antioxidant and fatty acid content of walnuts contribute to their anti-inflammatory properties, thereby reducing oxidative stress in the liver. Additionally, nuts and seeds offer metabolic health benefits as well.
It is recommended that males aim to consume at least an eighth of a cup of nuts (approximately two tablespoons) on a daily basis to reap the potential benefits in preventing NAFLD.
Berries: A Powerhouse of Antioxidants
Berries, including dark varieties like blueberries, are renowned for their high antioxidant content. These antioxidants, known as polyphenols, have been found to support the liver in breaking down fat through a process called fatty acid oxidation. Moreover, berries have shown potential in aiding with hepatic fibrosis, which is characterized by liver scarring, as well as age-related liver dysfunction. While further research on human subjects is needed to fully substantiate these benefits, the already established advantages of berries coupled with their potential liver benefits make them a valuable addition to any diet.
