Is There a Cure for Chronic Wasting Disease?
Unfortunately, there is currently no known treatment or vaccine available for chronic wasting disease. One of the challenges in diagnosing this disease is that animals can only be confirmed to have it after death. While deer or elk may exhibit symptoms that suggest the presence of chronic wasting disease, there are other conditions that can manifest similarly, making it difficult to ascertain the true extent of the animal’s affliction. As of now, chronic wasting disease remains an untreatable condition.
Which Animals are Prone to Developing Chronic Wasting Disease?
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is not widespread among free-ranging elk and deer populations across the country. However, in certain regions where the disease is prevalent, infection rates can exceed 10 percent. In fact, there have been reports of localized infection rates surpassing 25 percent. It is worth noting that captive deer are at a higher risk, with infection rates as high as 79 percent reported in at least one captive herd.
