What happens during a scan?
When undergoing a scan, the patient will be instructed to lie very still on their back on the scanner bed. Slowly, the bed will move through the scanner, emitting a quiet whirring sound that should not be a cause for concern. In some cases, the patient may be required to lie face-down during the procedure. The entire process is usually quick and typically takes only a few minutes to complete. Before the scan begins, the radiographer will exit the room and observe from behind a screen. They may also provide instructions to the patient, such as holding their breath for short periods if necessary.
Understanding the Aftermath of a CT Scan
Once a CT scan is concluded, patients are typically allowed to return home. However, if sedation or the administration of a dye injection was necessary, individuals may be required to stay in the hospital for a few hours until they have fully recuperated from any potential side effects. It is important to note that the results of the scan are unlikely to be immediately available, as the interpretation of the images requires time and expertise. Consequently, patients can expect their doctor to carefully analyze the images and provide them with feedback at a later time.
