Diagnosing a Goiter
When it comes to diagnosing a goiter, different tests are performed by your doctor. The initial examination involves taking a blood sample to determine whether your thyroid is overactive or underactive. In case the results are inconclusive or insufficient, further testing may be necessary. Additional tests that may be conducted include radioactive iodine testing, thyroid ultrasound, and a fine needle aspiration biopsy.
Can a Goiter Disappear Without Treatment?
While it is possible for a goiter to go away on its own, medical intervention is often necessary. Attempting to let a goiter resolve itself can carry certain risks. For instance, a goiter may lead to the complete cessation of thyroxine production by the thyroid gland.
