10 General Symptoms of Personality Disorder

Self Medication

Substance abuse is more likely to occur in individuals with personality disorders. These individuals often turn to alcohol or drugs as a way to escape negative cycles and try to feel more “normal.” In some cases, addiction may develop as a result of the medications prescribed to treat their illness. Alternatively, substance abuse can also trigger the onset of a personality disorder. Regardless of the cause, substance abuse can worsen symptoms including anxiety and depressed mood, and can also have negative interactions with prescription medications.

Dangerous Behavior

When individuals have personality disorders, they may engage in risky behavior or resort to self-harm. In some cases, they may even contemplate or attempt suicide, particularly if there is a co-existing mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder.
