Impaired Swallowing
Tetanus can have a significant impact on the nervous system, leading to difficulties in swallowing. Initially, the muscles responsible for chewing are typically affected, and the symptoms may gradually extend to the neck. As the condition progresses, individuals may find it challenging to open their mouths or tilt their necks. If there is any unexplained difficulty in swallowing or opening the mouth, seeking immediate medical attention is imperative.
Difficulty Breathing
When tetanus progresses to the point where it affects the lungs, it can have fatal consequences. The muscle spasms caused by the infection can make it extremely hard, or even impossible, for a person to regulate their breathing. Difficulty in inhaling is a medical emergency, and immediate hospitalization is necessary. In severe cases, patients may need mechanical ventilation to assist them in breathing until they can do so on their own.
