10 Interesting Facts about Ekbom Syndrome

Women and Ekbom Syndrome

Ekbom Syndrome is more prevalent in women, especially those who are over the age of 40. This higher occurrence in women could be attributed to the hormonal fluctuations that accompany menopause. Additionally, a significant proportion of individuals affected by Ekbom Syndrome are elderly men and women who experience social isolation.

Delusional Parasitosis

A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic between 2001 and 2007 investigated Ekbom syndrome in 108 individuals. The researchers performed skin biopsies and conducted thorough examinations to identify any presence of actual parasites or bugs. However, no evidence of such organisms was discovered. As a result, the study concluded that the sensation of bugs crawling on the skin experienced by these individuals was attributed to delusional parasitosis, a medical term used to describe the belief that the bugs are real.
