Scalp Infections Caused by Viruses
Viruses, such as chickenpox or shingles, have the ability to spread to the scalp and cause infections. Although many individuals receive chickenpox vaccinations during childhood, the virus still remains relatively common. The distinct red, bumpy rash associated with chickenpox can resurface later in life as shingles. Similar to chickenpox, the shingles virus is capable of infecting the scalp, but it often leads to soreness and pain along with itching. It is important to note that shingles can be contagious to individuals who have not developed immunity to chickenpox.
Ingrown Hairs
Scalp infections can also be caused by ingrown hairs. Due to the abundance of hair on the scalp compared to other areas of the body, it is more prone to inflammation and discomfort caused by these ingrown hairs. An ingrown hair occurs when the hair is removed, but the remaining part beneath the skin becomes trapped and fails to grow in the correct direction. This can result in symptoms such as pain, itching, and the formation of small, hard bumps. Ingrown hairs are commonly caused by shaving and other hair removal methods, but they usually resolve on their own over time.
