Prevalence of Myopia
The prevalence of myopia, or nearsightedness, has been increasing over the years. In America, approximately 42 percent of individuals aged 12 to 54 are affected by this condition. This percentage has risen significantly from 25 percent in the 1970s. However, the prevalence of myopia is even higher in other parts of the world. In Asia, for example, it is estimated that up to 80 percent of the population has myopia.
A study published in the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2016 made a startling prediction regarding the future prevalence of myopia. According to the study, it is projected that by the year 2050, approximately half of the world’s population will be affected by myopia.
Signs of Myopia
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, can be identified by several signs. One of the most noticeable signs is the blurriness of objects in the distance. Individuals with myopia may also experience frequent headaches, eye fatigue, and shoulder pain due to the strain put on their eyes while trying to focus. It is particularly common for myopia to develop during childhood, so parents should be vigilant and watch out for certain habits that may indicate their child has myopia. These habits include sitting too close to the television or holding screens close to the face. Children with myopia often resort to squinting and tilting their heads as well. Additionally, observant teachers may notice difficulties in reading the blackboard among children with myopia.
