10 Signs of an Ulcer

Vomiting Blood: Understanding Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a well-known complication associated with ulcers. Although these bleeds typically resolve without intervention, persistent cases can lead to a distressing symptom known as vomiting blood or hematemesis. This condition occurs when there is hemorrhaging, or bleeding, of the stomach lining. The vomit may contain bright red blood or, more commonly, reddish-brown clumps of partially digested blood. Interestingly, this occurrence can manifest even in the absence of pain.

Abnormal Stools

Abnormal stools can be a result of hemorrhaging from an ulcer. When this occurs, the feces may contain bright red blood, known as hematochezia, or appear black and tarry, which is called melena. If the ulcer continues to bleed and there is blood loss in the stool, it can cause low blood pressure and anemia. Symptoms of anemia include weakness and fatigue.
