Dizziness and Lightheadedness
Atrial fibrillation can result in episodes of dizziness or lightheadedness due to fluctuations in blood pressure. These sensations can be unpleasant and interfere with a person’s ability to focus on tasks or responsibilities. Additionally, feeling dizzy can impair one’s driving abilities and is linked to a higher risk of falls, particularly among older individuals. Consequently, it is important to address the symptoms of dizziness and lightheadedness associated with atrial fibrillation to minimize the potential for accidents and injuries.
Shortness of Breath: A Symptom of Heart Failure in AFib
Shortness of breath is a common symptom associated with heart failure, a condition where the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. In cases of untreated atrial fibrillation (AFib), the risk of developing heart failure increases. This is due to the rapid and irregular heart rate in AFib, which hinders the heart’s ability to adequately fill its chambers with blood, thus impairing its overall efficiency in pumping blood throughout the body.
As a result of this impaired pumping function, blood may accumulate in the veins that transport blood from the lungs to the heart. This buildup of blood causes fluid to back up into the lungs, leading to the sensation of shortness of breath. Individuals experiencing this symptom may also exhibit wheezing, gasping, and fatigue.
