Challenges in Communication for Children with Autism
One of the key difficulties often observed in children with autism is their impaired communication abilities. These children may struggle to initiate conversations and may not respond effectively to others’ attempts to interact with them. They often appear unaware of the social norms associated with communication, such as making eye contact, speaking clearly, or following instructions. While some children may go through phases of disobedience, children with autism typically do not outgrow these tendencies.
Fixations
Children with autism may develop fixations, similar to the preoccupation with specific objects. This can lead to an excessive fascination or obsession with a particular subject. These children often have specialized interests and exhibit a strong desire to gain extensive knowledge about their chosen topic. For instance, a child with autism may spend hours observing the spinning motion of a fan or become fixated on learning everything about a specific insect or the protagonist of a movie. This behavior sets them apart from typical children who tend to quickly shift their interests.
