Unexplained Weight Loss
Unexplained weight loss can be a cause for concern when there is no obvious reason or when the weight loss is too rapid. While losing weight through exercise and a healthy diet is generally a positive thing, sudden and unexplained weight loss may be a sign of underlying health issues.
One such condition that can cause unexplained weight loss is lymphoma. Lymphoma-affected cells, as well as the immune cells that work to fight them off, are highly energy hungry. These cells can deplete the body’s fat reserves at a much faster rate than normal activity. This leads to rapid drops in both body weight and fat composition.
It is important to pay attention if you experience a drop of 5 percent of your total body weight in a single month, especially if it is not attributed to changes in diet or exercise patterns. This sudden weight loss could be a potential warning sign for lymphoma. Additionally, a 10-percent drop in body weight over a period of six months should also be taken seriously as a potential indicator of lymphoma.
Fatigue: A Common Symptom of Lymphoma
One of the most prevalent symptoms experienced by individuals with lymphoma is fatigue, although the exact reason behind this is still unknown. Some experts speculate that the intense fatigue may be a result of the high energy consumption caused by weight loss. While occasional tiredness is a normal occurrence for everyone, persistent and unexplained fatigue can be a potential indicator of lymphoma. Lymphoma patients often experience sudden drops in energy levels, feeling exhausted even without engaging in any physical activity. Unfortunately, fatigue is not exclusive to lymphoma and can be associated with various other conditions or even occur without any underlying health issues. Consequently, accurately identifying the root cause of fatigue can be challenging, often requiring extensive testing.
