10 Signs of Measles

Spots Inside the Mouth: An Early Sign of Measles

One of the early signs of measles is the appearance of spots inside the patient’s mouth. These spots may manifest before the more recognizable body rash. Typically, these mouth spots are small and initially red, with a grey to white center. They tend to fade away within a few days. If a patient develops mouth spots and subsequently experiences a body rash a few days later, it is a strong indication of measles. It is worth noting, however, that mouth spots are not always present in all cases of measles and may not follow this specific pattern.

Signs and Symptoms of Measles

One of the initial signs of measles is a high fever. During the early stages of the illness, patients commonly experience a fever that can reach temperatures as high as 104 to 105.8°F (40 to 41°C). Diagnosing measles solely based on this fever can be challenging since other characteristic symptoms may not be present. However, the connection between the fever and measles becomes more evident when the distinctive spots appear on the forehead. As the rash develops, the patient’s fever typically increases significantly, ultimately confirming the diagnosis of measles.
