Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis

Digestion and the Effects of Spinal Deviation

When the spine deviates from its normal position, it can have detrimental effects on various systems within the body. However, the digestive organs are particularly vulnerable to these consequences. The process of digestion begins with the act of swallowing food, which then travels down the esophagus. Unfortunately, scoliosis can make chewing more challenging and restrict the space within the esophagus. Additionally, it may exert pressure on the stomach and intestines, ultimately hindering the absorption of nutrients from the food that reaches these organs.

One of the additional side effects caused by this compression is the build-up of stomach acid, leading to conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Furthermore, scoliosis can contribute to constipation and create a general sensation of fullness in the abdominal region.
