Bumps on the Eyelid
When it comes to the delicate skin of the eyelid, it’s important to be aware of any abnormalities that may indicate potential health issues. The eyelid, being made up of extremely thin skin, is particularly vulnerable to the harmful UV rays of the sun. In fact, between five and ten percent of all skin cancers develop on the eyelids, with the majority occurring on the lower lid.
Basal cell carcinomas are the most common type of skin cancer found on the eyelids. These slow-growing cancers can manifest as smooth, shiny bumps that may appear firm or red. It is crucial to have such bumps investigated by a doctor immediately, as they could be a symptom of this type of skin cancer. Additionally, other signs to watch out for include styes, nodules, swelling of the eyelid, or lesions that grow, bleed, or do not heal. These could also indicate a potential disease.
Although less common, other types of skin cancer can also develop in the eye area. Squamous cell cancers, malignant melanomas, and sebaceous gland carcinomas are among the possibilities. Therefore, any unusual changes or symptoms should not be ignored. It’s important to note that in some cases, individuals may also experience the unexpected loss of eyelashes.
Symptoms of Uncommon Skin Cancers
Although rare, certain types of skin cancer can still have significant consequences. If you notice purple or red patches on your skin or in your mucous membranes, it could be a sign of Kaposi sarcoma. This particular cancer originates in the cells that line the blood or lymph vessels. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV, have a higher risk of developing this type of cancer.
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is characterized by the presence of firm, shiny, flesh-colored, or bluish-red nodules. These nodules typically develop below the surface of the skin and at the hair follicles on the neck, head, and body. Although MCC is quite uncommon, with physicians diagnosing around 2,000 cases annually, it is more frequently observed in men aged 70 and above.
