When a doctor suspects a duodenal ulcer, they often request an endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis. This procedure, also known as a gastroscopy, involves the insertion of a telescope tube through the gullet. Although it can be uncomfortable, it provides clear visual evidence of an ulcer or inflammation, enabling the doctor to determine the most appropriate treatment. Additionally, if the doctor suspects that the ulcer is caused by an H. pylori infection, stool and blood tests may also be conducted to aid in the accurate diagnosis.
When Surgery is Needed for Complications
In the past, surgery was often used as a treatment option for duodenal ulcers before the connection between these ulcers and H. pylori infections was discovered. Nowadays, medical treatments with medications are the preferred approach. However, in more complex cases, surgery may still be necessary. Surgical intervention becomes essential when a patient experiences severe bleeding or perforation of the stomach lining.
