10 Symptoms and Treatments of Babesiosis

Causes of Hemolytic Anemia in Babesiosis

Hemolytic anemia is a rare but serious complication that can arise from a babesiosis infection. Fortunately, the likelihood of developing this condition is relatively low. Hemolytic anemia occurs when the parasite responsible for babesiosis destroys red blood cells in the body. The duration of this condition can range from a few days to several months, depending on the individual case.

In severe cases, patients may experience blood clots and fluctuations in blood pressure levels. In some instances, organ failure may occur, posing a significant threat to the patient’s life. Unfortunately, a small number of infected individuals do not survive the complications associated with hemolytic anemia, especially those with weakened immune systems.

Babesiosis Symptoms Can Manifest Without a Tick Bite

Although babesiosis is typically transmitted through a tick bite, individuals who have never encountered a tick may still experience flu-like symptoms of the disease. This can occur when a person receives a blood transfusion from someone who is infected with babesiosis. It is not uncommon for symptoms to not immediately manifest after a tick bite, which is why hospitals may inadvertently obtain blood from a donor with this infection. Additionally, newborn babies can occasionally contract babesiosis from an infected mother.
