Signs and Symptoms of Alpha Thalassemia
Alpha thalassemia is a more severe variant of the condition, characterized by various symptoms. Common manifestations include malnourishment, jaundice, and an abnormally enlarged spleen. Among the different types of alpha thalassemia, hydrops fetalis is considered the most critical form, as it develops even before birth. Infants with this condition are typically stillborn or have a significantly reduced lifespan. Hydrops fetalis only occurs when all the alpha globin genes are either missing or altered.
Beta Thalassemia Symptoms
Beta thalassemia is an extremely severe form of the disorder and presents with a variety of symptoms. These symptoms may include pale skin, decreased appetite, irritability, and frequent infections. Additionally, individuals affected by this condition may experience difficulty thriving, jaundice, and enlarged organs.
Treatment for beta thalassemia typically involves frequent blood transfusions. Without these transfusions, the individual’s health will rapidly decline. Another potential treatment option for this disorder is a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, which is a more complex procedure. However, finding a compatible donor is essential for this type of treatment. It should be noted that a stem cell or bone marrow transplant is the only treatment capable of providing a potential cure for beta thalassemia.
