10 Symptoms and Treatments of the Common Cold

Coping with Coughing: Natural Remedies and When to Seek Medical Attention

Coughing is a common symptom that often accompanies a cold. It can manifest as a wet or productive cough, which helps expel phlegm from the respiratory system. While this type of cough may linger for some time, it is typically not a cause for alarm. However, if a cough is accompanied by a fever and thick, greenish mucus, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Over-the-counter cough syrups are readily available for relief. These syrups usually contain expectorants that work by loosening mucus, increasing its water content, and thinning it out. Alternatively, if you prefer natural remedies, you can create your own expectorant. A combination of a teaspoon of dried licorice root mixed with honey and lemon in a warm drink can provide relief. Peppermint tea, which contains menthol, also helps to thin mucus. Eucalyptus is another natural expectorant and decongestant that has been commonly used.

A Sore Throat

A sore throat is caused by the inflammation of tissues due to a cold virus. This inflammation can make swallowing difficult, especially when consuming solid food. When dealing with a cold-related sore throat, it is best to turn to home remedies for relief.

One effective remedy is gargling with warm, salty water. This simple solution can help alleviate the discomfort of a sore throat. Another popular option is to drink a mixture of hot water, two teaspoons of honey, and the juice of half a lemon. Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which can boost the immune system, while the honey creates a soothing coating on irritated mucous membranes, making swallowing easier.

For additional relief, lozenges and throat sprays can also be used to soothe the discomfort of a sore throat.
