10 Symptoms of Liver Failure

Mental Impairment Resulting from Liver Failure

When liver failure leads to hepatic encephalopathy, individuals may encounter difficulties with their cognitive function and mental activities. Metabolic irregularities are responsible for the development of psychological confusion. Tasks requiring mental acuity become challenging, abstract thinking becomes elusive, and sustaining focus becomes problematic. In certain instances, speech may become unintelligible as well. These impairments are a consequence of the accumulation of harmful substances in the brain. As the liver is responsible for detoxifying the body, including the brain, its failure results in the build-up of toxins throughout the body.

Sleepiness and its Connection to Liver Failure

Sleepiness can often serve as an initial indicator of hepatic encephalopathy, a condition triggered by the onset of liver failure. Individuals with advanced or chronic liver failure commonly experience excessive fatigue. However, if extreme drowsiness is accompanied by other symptoms associated with liver disease, it may be indicative of acute liver failure.
