10 Symptoms of Burkitt’s Lymphoma

Central Nervous System Complications of Lymphoma

Lymphoma that spreads to the spinal cord or brain presents unique health risks due to its specific location. When Burkitt’s lymphoma affects the central nervous system, patients in stage IV may experience a different set of symptoms such as headaches, seizures, confusion, and difficulties with concentration.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to undergo tests to assess the location, size, and severity of the lymphoma. Fortunately, there are various treatment options available to aid in recovery.

Distortion of Facial Bones

Facial bone distortion is a common occurrence in both sporadic and endemic Burkitt’s lymphoma, particularly among children. The cancerous tumors have a tendency to develop in areas where permanent teeth are in the process of forming, leading to significant growth abnormalities. The rapid expansion of the lymph nodes is responsible for the severe swelling and deformation of the facial bones. Although the enlarged lymph nodes may or may not be sensitive to touch, they have the ability to double in size overnight. If you or your child experience excessive facial swelling or notice any displacement of the jaw bone, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency room.

A standard blood test can be administered to test for lymphoma, as the presence of lymphoma cells can be observed under a microscope. It is important to note that lymphoma, including Burkitt’s lymphoma, cannot be transmitted from person to person and is not influenced by genetics or inheritance. However, individuals with a weakened immune system due to conditions such as HIV or other infections are more susceptible to developing Burkitt’s lymphoma.
