Heart Problems in Babies with Down Syndrome
Babies with Down syndrome often experience heart-related problems or defects. It is not uncommon for these babies to be born with heart problems, with up to half of all children with Down syndrome being affected by them. One of the most common heart-related issues is an atrioventricular septal defect, which occurs when there is a hole in the heart muscle that separates its multiple chambers. This condition disrupts normal blood flow in the heart and can have significant consequences for overall health. Fortunately, if this condition is detected early enough, corrective surgery is usually an option.
Brushfield Spots
Brushfield spots, a common symptom of Down syndrome, are characterized by the presence of spots in the iris of the eye. While brushfield spots can occur in many children, they are more commonly seen in individuals with Down syndrome. The development of these spots is attributed to the aggregation of connective tissue. Interestingly, brushfield spots tend to affect people of European descent more frequently than those of other ethnicities, although the exact reasons for this remain unknown. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, brushfield spots are not a cause for concern and do not necessitate further medical intervention.
