Lack of Social and Learning Skills in Children with DMD
Children diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) often struggle with social and learning skills, falling behind their peers in these areas. These children have difficulties in acquiring the same social and communication abilities as others, such as interpreting facial expressions and understanding non-verbal cues. Additionally, their memory function may not meet the expected level for their age, further hindering their learning capabilities.
These challenges significantly impact their daily lives, both at home and in school settings. In some cases, parents may initially suspect their child has autism or another developmental condition that affects social and emotional development, unaware of the familial predisposition to DMD.
Respiratory Challenges Associated with DMD
When discussing individuals experiencing difficulties with their breathing, it is common to think of those living with asthma or older adults. However, individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) also encounter significant respiratory challenges as the disease progresses. Although DMD is primarily recognized as a degenerative muscle disorder, the weakening of the muscles supporting the lungs becomes noticeable during the early teenage years. As the disease advances, these breathing difficulties can worsen to the extent that patients may require respiratory assistance equipment, placing their lives at risk.
