10 Symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease

Understanding Ascites: Causes and Symptoms

Ascites refers to the abnormal accumulation of excess fluid within the peritoneal cavity, the space between the abdominal wall and the internal organs. This condition often manifests as noticeable swelling in the belly. While numerous health conditions can lead to ascites, the primary cause is typically high blood pressure in the veins responsible for transporting blood to the liver. Medically referred to as portal hypertension, this condition is frequently associated with liver diseases, including fatty liver.

Fatigue: A Common Early Symptom of Fatty Liver Disease

Fatigue is a prevalent early symptom that is observed in approximately 50% of cases of fatty liver disease. In 25% of these cases, the fatigue is severe enough to significantly impact the affected individual’s quality of life. Alongside physical exhaustion, mental fatigue is also frequently experienced, making it challenging to perform both mental and physical tasks. This mental fatigue may be associated with the development of depression and anxiety, which often accompany fatty liver disease.

Research indicates that the impairment of communication between the liver and the brain may contribute to the manifestation of fatigue. The basal ganglia, a region of the brain responsible for voluntary motor control and emotion regulation, is one area that is affected by this impaired communication.
