10 Symptoms of Gallstones

Yellowing of the Skin and Eyes

When a gallstone gets stuck in the main duct that connects the liver to the intestine, it can obstruct the normal flow of bile from the liver. As a result, bile starts to accumulate in the liver and leaks into the bloodstream. This accumulation of bile in the bloodstream causes a condition known as jaundice, which is characterized by the yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. In addition to the discoloration, individuals with jaundice may experience intense itching. In cases where the gallstone does not pass through the bile duct naturally, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Changes in Stool and Urine Color

Jaundice can lead to changes in stool and urine color, resulting in pale stool and dark urine. The presence of excess bilirubin, the substance responsible for the yellowing of the skin and eyes, also causes the urine to darken in color. Additionally, gallstones can obstruct the release of bile salts, which are responsible for the normal brown color of stool. When the flow of bile is blocked, the stool may lose its usual hue.
