10 Symptoms of Lymphedema

Puffiness: An Early Sign of Lymphedema

One of the initial symptoms of lymphedema is the puffiness of the skin in the affected area. In the first stage of this condition, the farthest part of the limb experiences a puffy appearance. For instance, if the lymph vessels in the leg are blocked, the foot may appear swollen. Similarly, if the flow of lymph is impaired in the arm, the hand may exhibit puffiness beyond the ordinary. This initial swelling is often the first noticeable indication of lymphedema.

Impaired Visibility of Veins: A Symptom of Lymphedema

As the progression of lymphedema takes its toll, one common symptom that may arise is a decreased ability to perceive or detect the veins or tendons in the affected limbs. Consequently, the skin in these areas may exhibit impressions or indentations caused by the underlying pressure, a condition referred to as ‘pitting’ edema. If the veins on the top of your foot or hand become invisible, it could indicate the initial stage of lymphedema. During this stage, swelling may temporarily diminish overnight or when the affected limb is elevated. However, it is important to note that these methods only provide temporary relief from lymphedema symptoms.
