Understanding Swollen Tonsils
When experiencing a sore throat, it is not uncommon for the tonsils to become swollen. In some severe cases, the tonsils may even fill with pus, indicating the need for immediate medical attention. Additionally, one may notice the presence of petechiae, which are reddish-purple spots on the roof of the mouth. These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for strep throat, as both conditions produce similar effects. However, a straightforward strep test can help differentiate between the two and rule out any alternative infections.
Skin Rash: A Possible Symptom of Mononucleosis
Mononucleosis, commonly known as the “kissing disease,” can sometimes result in a skin rash that resembles measles. This rash typically appears on the arms and trunk. It is important to note that since mononucleosis is caused by a virus, antibiotics are ineffective in treating it. However, there are instances when a doctor may mistakenly diagnose the condition as a bacterial infection, such as strep throat, and prescribe antibiotics. In rare cases, these antibiotics can cause a mild generalized itch or rash.
