10 Symptoms of Narcolepsy

Understanding Automatic Behavior

Automatic behavior refers to the phenomenon where an individual engages in actions without conscious self-control, and later on, has no memory of the episode. This peculiar state often involves the repetitive execution of purposeless tasks or the continuous utterance of verbal words.

Rapid Entry to REM Sleep

Individuals with narcolepsy have distinct sleep patterns compared to those without the condition. Unlike non-narcoleptic individuals who may take up to 90 minutes to enter the REM sleep state, narcoleptics can enter REM sleep immediately after falling asleep. This means that narcoleptics experience the typical features of REM sleep, including vivid dreams and muscle paralysis, shortly after falling asleep, regardless of whether it is daytime or nighttime.
