10 Symptoms of Prader-Willi Syndrome

Symptoms of Prader-Willi Syndrome: Cognitive Impairment

Children with Prader-Willi syndrome often experience cognitive disabilities. Typically, this condition leads to mild to moderate intellectual impairments, and even those without severe cognitive developmental issues may still encounter certain challenges. Although cognitive ability is affected by Prader-Willi syndrome, other factors such as the constant distraction of feeling hungry can also hinder the learning process. As a result, children with this syndrome may lag behind their peers in terms of intellectual capabilities. However, it is possible to address this issue by collaborating closely with your child’s pediatrician and school in order to develop an effective alternative learning plan, if necessary.

Scoliosis in Children with Prader-Willi Syndrome

Scoliosis, a condition where the spine does not develop properly, is a common issue among children with Prader-Willi syndrome. Unlike a straight spine, scoliosis causes a curve to form, often in a C- or S-shape, leading to poor posture. Depending on the degree of the curve, it can also result in pain and physical limitations. Fortunately, various treatment options, including braces, are available to address scoliosis. In most primary or elementary schools, scoliosis screening is a routine practice. However, treating scoliosis in children with Prader-Willi syndrome can be more challenging due to their limited tolerance for changes, such as wearing a brace.
