10 Symptoms of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis

Xanthomas: Symptoms of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis

Xanthomas are a common symptom of primary biliary cirrhosis, a condition characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol-rich materials in the body. These fatty deposits typically manifest as yellowish nodules and can be found in various areas, ranging from the knees to the eyelids. However, the specific placement of xanthomas is often associated with different diseases. In the case of primary biliary cirrhosis, it predominantly causes tendon xanthomas, which are characterized by the presence of nodules in the hands, feet, and heels.

Steatorrhea: Excessive Fat in Feces

Excessive fat in the body can result in a corresponding increase in fat content in the feces, leading to a condition known as steatorrhea. This condition is characterized by the presence of oily or greasy diarrhea after a bowel movement. Additionally, stools may appear paler than usual and emit a particularly foul odor. It is important to note that while steatorrhea is not directly related to primary biliary cirrhosis, individuals with this condition may also experience darker urine as an additional symptom.
