10 Symptoms of Rabies

Recognizing the Initial Indications of Infection

The initial symptoms of rabies are nonspecific and can be easily mistaken for flu-like symptoms. These include fever, weakness, a feeling of overall discomfort, headache, vomiting, and nausea. Additionally, individuals may experience itching, prickling sensations, or general discomfort at the site of the bite. Although these signs could be attributed to other illnesses, they should be treated with utmost seriousness if they manifest following an animal bite.

Symptoms of Encephalitic vs. Paralytic Rabies

Rabies, a viral disease, has different strains but only two variations in its presentation. The first variation is encephalitic rabies, also known as the “furious” form, which is the most common. It is characterized by aggression, excessive salivation, and agitation. This is the classic image that comes to mind when one thinks of rabies. The second variation, known as paralytic or “dumb” rabies, is less common. Individuals infected with this form experience lethargy, muscle weakness, and progressing paralysis. It is crucial to note that the presentation of symptoms does not alter the severity of the disease. Encephalitic rabies typically progresses more rapidly, but paralytic rabies is equally fatal.
